Winfield Police are identifying the body, which was found Tuesday in City Lake

An Atlanta man has been identified as the person who was recovered from Winfield City Lake Tuesday afternoon.

Jon “Mike” Michael Sanford, 75, was pulled from the lake around 4:45 p.m., according to Winfield Police.

At approximately 12:15 p.m., members of the Winfield Police Department and the Winfield Fire/EMS Department were dispatched to Winfield City Lake for a report of a boat in the water near the unoccupied shore on the north side of the lake.

During the initial investigation it was assumed that the boat was operated before being parked on the shore of the lake. Based on this information, initial search efforts were started both on land near the boat and in the water.

Members of the Winfield Fire/EMS and the Arkansas City Fire Department each initially used a boat to conduct search operations in the water. The search also called in resources from outside agencies, planes from the Kansas Highway Patrol, and small drones from the Cowley County Sheriff‘s Office and the Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism.

During the search, the Sedgwick County Fire District dive team was asked to assist in the search effort. The Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism and the Sedgwick County Fire District deployed boats equipped with sonar technology into the water where the victim’s boat was last seen.

Just before 5 a.m., the victim was located underwater and killed by divers from the Sedgwick County Fire District and the Arkansas City Fire Department.

No foul play is suspected at this time. Members of the Winfield Police Department and the Winfield Fire/EMS were assisted by the Arkansas City Fire Department, the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Sedgwick County Fire District, and the Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism.
