Utah is home to BYU and Dixie State in Ute Field

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women’s soccer team returns to Ute Field this week for two matches against teams from the state. On Thursday, Utah welcomes Brigham Young, presented by DoTERRA, before the week ends on Sunday with host Dixie State.

Last time off

The Utes took the place on September 5 when they faced Butler University in Indianapolis. The Utes were defeated 2-1 in the game. The Bulldogs came out and scored two goals in five minutes towards the end of the first half. Utah responded and scored in the 42nd minute of half when Courtney Talbot scored on a PK. Utah increased the offensive pressure in the second half, but could not find the equalizer.

Scouting Brigham Young

Brigham Young is the 22nd team in the top 25 United Soccer Coaches in the matchup with the Utes. The Cougars are on the field 3-2-0 for the season, with all three wins coming from South Field in Provo, Utah. Brigham Young beat Marquette 7-0 on September 2nd. Seven different players scored one goal in the game, and the Cougars limited Marquette to five shots in the competition. This season the Cougars have scored 13 goals while their opponents have been limited to 5 goals. Brigham Young overtakes his opponents by 108 to 68. Mikayla Colohan leads the team with three goals this season. She is one of nine players who have scored a goal this season. Brecken Mozingo and Bella Folino are the only other multi-goal players. Cassidy Smith has started all five games in goal for the Cougars and has 11 saves with one shutout. It allows 1.07 goals per game.

Scouting Dixie State

The Trailblazers of Dixie State start the week with a 3-3-0 record. Before it plays in Utah on Sunday, Dixie State is hosting the University of the Pacific at Greater Zion Stadium. This will be the first home game of the year for Dixie State. The Trailblazers come after nine goals this season, while they are 11. Whitley Griffiths leads the team with three goals scored. Two of their three goals were game winners. Kalea Woodyatt is second on the team with two goals. Kayla Gonzales leads the team in goal, having played 315 minutes this season. She has allowed four goals and has counted 18 saves. It allows 1.14 goals per game.

Last time against BYU

The Utes and Cougars played in February during the 2020-21 spring season and were the season opener. These two met at the Zion Bank Training Center in Herriman, Utah. The Utes failed in the matchup against the Cougars and fell 5-1 to the then number 10 in the country. Utah holds an all-time record of 7-24-2 against the Cougars and is 4-10-0 when playing at Ute Field.

Last time against Dixie State

In the second game of the 2020/21 spring season, the Utes faced the Trailblazers and Utah won 2-1 against Dixie State. In the second period of overtime Hanna Olsen scored the game-winning goal. She scored both goals for the Utes in the game. Sunday will be the second ever meeting between these two programs. Utah won their first matchup last season.

Olsen’s career day

Last season Hanna Olsen had a career day against Dixie State. Olsen scored the first goal of her college career against the Trailblazers. She wasn’t done yet when she scored the decisive goal in double overtime and helped the Utes to their first win of the season. Olsen’s four-point, two-goal game against Dixie State is her career highlight in this week’s matchups. What is she doing this week?

Next up

After a two-game home stand, the Utes will return to the streets on Thursday, September 16, to take on the state of Utah, with the first kick happening at 5 p.m. MT. The matchup against the Aggies will be the last non-conference game of the season for the Utes. Utah opens the Pac-12 game on Friday, September 24th in Stanford.
