Two men arrested after firing a pistol in City Creek Canyon

Officials said they safely arrested two men who were accused of firing a gun in City Creek Canyon.

Salt Lake City police said the investigation began just after 5 p.m. Monday when community members called the department after hearing gunshots from the canyon near the pavilion.

Police said they searched the area for the suspects and spoke to witnesses who said they saw the two men heading towards the Utah State Capitol.

Both suspects were arrested after completing a high-risk traffic control near 500 North East Capitol Boulevard, officials added.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, it does not appear that the suspects were targeting parishioners,” a press release said. “However, this incident has created significant concern and created the risk of serious injury to the people who use City Creek Canyon.”

There were no reports of personal injury or property damage.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and the suspects’ identities will not be released until they are logged into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.

They said they want to remind people that City Creek Canyon is within the city limits where it is illegal to fire guns.
