SALT LAKE CITY – Tony Finau won the 3M Open after a final round of four under par to win the 3M Open by five shots. Finau earned $1,350,000 with the win.
The win marked Finau’s third career PGA Tour win. He most recently won at The Northern Trust on tour in August 2021.
“Really all I had, every time I looked up, I was four or five shots behind. I really got going in the back nine and when I took the lead I had a completely different attitude. A few swirling turns down the track but I called the bank on 18 and was able to get it done,” said Finau immediately after the win.
3M Open Champion Tony Finau
Finau started the final loop 5 shots down on overnight leader Scott Piercy, but quickly tracked down those in front of him with a 22-foot birdie on the second green. He then hit a cracking iron shot off the tee of the par 3 4th hole that set up a comfortable 8 foot putt for birdie to go down on round two.
On the eighth tee, Finau was still five shots behind.
Finau ended the opening nine with an unlucky bogey and made the turn with just one under par. However, Finau received help from those in front of him as Finau collapsed under the pressure. Piercy made the turn for even par, but quickly found problems on the back nine. Added bogeys on 11, 13 and 15 and a triple on 14 to lower the rankings.
As Piercy fell apart, Finau found his form. Finau shagged 11, 14, 15 and 16 as he seemed to make every putt he stood over.
Finau made over 110 feet worth of putts during his final round. The hole got bigger and bigger as the round went on.
On the 17th, Finau hit a 6 iron from 197 yards and his ball bounced off the gallery and came within inches of finding the water and catapulting back over the green. Luck was on his side.
But by this point in the round, Finau held a five-stroke lead. He almost pocketed the chip and settled for par before heading proudly to the 18th tee while chants of “Tony” echoed across the golf course.
Interestingly, Finau pulled out the driver on the 18th tee and continued to dribble his shot into the water on the right. He dropped onto the fairway, smashed an iron down the fairway, his approach landed on the front edge of the green, and two putts later finished with a bogey on an 18.
Luckily, given his four-stroke advantage, the lost stroke at 18 didn’t affect the result.
Finau celebrated with a fist as the stands applauded a terrific final round from the tournament’s top-ranked golfer.
Finau became the sixth player this season to return to the finals with at least five shots.
Finau is in the field next week and is expected to play the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club.
Presidents Cup secured
Over the course of Finau’s career, he has managed to finish 2nd 10 times while adding two wins ahead of this year’s 3M Open.
Victory at the 3M Open secures his place at the upcoming Presidents Cup, which will be held in September at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
