Tony Finau back in battle after an impressive second round at East Lake

Salt Lake City, Utah – Tony Finau prevailed on Friday to compete in the Tour Championship again. With his three under par in the second round, Finau is again nine under par and eight ahead of the leader Patrick Cantlay.

Details on the second round

Finau started with three pars in a row to calm his nerves. Then he stumbled across the par 4 3rd hole doing three putt and his first bogey of the day. Unfortunately, the three-putt occurred after an approach shot that left him only 19 feet for the birdie.

But that’s golf, and like all good golfers, it quickly erases pain from memory.

Finau found his first birdie of the day on the 6th par 5 hole. He made another opening nine birdie on the 8th par 4 dropping a 12-foot left-to-right put on the front Lippe met and barely dripped into the bottom of the cup.

He made the turn at one under par.

His back nine started in a similar way to his front nine, with a bogey.

On the 10th, Finau drove his ball into the Bermuda rough just to the right of the fairway. He chopped off his approach just before the green and left himself with a 92 yard chip for the birdie. Despite his best efforts, he failed to convert his 14-foot par attempt and settle for his last bogey of the day.

The final eight holes turned out to be far friendlier for Finau, who ended up with three birdies, two of which came on 17 and 18. Finau made two 10-foot putts for birdie at 17 and 18 to give him some momentum earlier in the weekend.

The charts

Currently, Finau is in a tie in fifth place with a long list of players under par on nine. Justin Thomas is in fourth place with 10 under par, Bryson DeChambeau in third place with 11 under, Jon Rahm in second with 16 under and Cantlay leads the field with 17 under par.

Start times and pairings will be announced at a later date, but Finau fans should expect his current positioning to start his tee shot around noon on Saturday.

Finau is fighting for his best result in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Previously, Finau had achieved his best result in the FedEx Cup standings in 2018 when he finished the season in sixth, this year he moved into the playoff final in second.
