Road closures, alternative routes – NBC Chicago

NOTE: NBC Chicago will be offering a live stream here starting October 10, 2021 at 7 a.m. with full coverage of the race.

With thousands of runners hitting Chicago’s streets in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon 2021 on October 10, road closures and detours will go into effect.

Which roads will be closed and for how long? How can you get around the city?

Here you can see what to expect, whether you come to the marathon or not.

Chicago Marathon Street will close in 2021

  • Columbus Drive: Grand Avenue start line: 7-10 a.m.
  • Grand Avenue: Columbus Drive to State Street: 7:00 am-10:00am
  • State Street: Grand Avenue to Jackson Blvd.: 7:00 am-10:30am
  • Jackson Blvd.: State Street to LaSalle Street: 7:00 am-10:30am

  • 31st Street: Indiana Avenue to Michigan Avenue: 7:00 am-4: 15 pm
  • Michigan Avenue: 31st Street to Roosevelt Road: 7:00 am-4: 30 pm
  • Roosevelt Road: Michigan Avenue to Columbus Drive: 7:00 am-6:00pm
  • Columbus Drive: Roosevelt Road to Finish Line: 7 am-6pm

* Parking restrictions also apply along the route from Sunday morning.

Alternative routes

Major roads

Lake Shore Drive: The north and south lanes will remain open.

Inner Lake Shore Drive: The north and south lanes will remain open from Diversey Pkwy. to Belmont Ave. Access to Lake Shore Dr. will remain open on Belmont Ave.

Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94): The east and west lanes will remain open. Exit blocked: Exit towards the south to 31st St.

Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94): The east and west lanes will remain open. Entrances and exits blocked: Adams St.

Eisenhower Expressway (I-290): The east and west lanes remain open.

Stevenson Expressway (I-55): The north and south lanes will remain open.

Close to you


(Bounded by Wells St., Van Buren St., Wabash Ave., and Lake St.)

All roads in the loop will be open to traffic on race day (October 7th) from 9:00 a.m. (public transport recommended).

North of the loop

Michigan Ave. north of 8th St. North and southbound remain open, including access to the Magnificent Mile.

Clybourn Avenue will remain open.

Lincoln Ave. north of Sedgwick St. remains open.

Clark St. north of Diversey Parkway. will stay open.

West of the loop

Milwaukee Avenue will remain open.

Halsted St. north of Adams St. remains open.

Ashland Ave. north of Adams St. remains open.

Ladies Ave. north of Adams St. remains open.

South of the loop

Ladies Avenue south of Jackson Blvd. will stay open.

Ashland Avenue south of Jackson Blvd. will stay open.

Archer Ave. south of Cermak Road. will stay open.

Halsted St. south of Cermak Rd. Will remain open.

Michigan Ave. south of 35th St. remains open.

Martin Luther King Dr. stays open.

Public transportation


The Chicago Transit Authority is planning an additional service for race day and the Abbott Health and Fitness Expo on Friday.

In recent years, the CTA has operated longer trains on the Brown, Green, Orange and Blue lines; more frequent service on the red, blue, brown and green lines before and / or after the event; and earlier service on the Purple Line.


Metra will offer additional / modified services on select routes to accommodate Chicago Marathon passengers. click here for a summary of the added / changed service.
