Crystal Lake residents weigh in on President Biden’s upcoming visit – NBC Chicago

President Joe Biden is due to visit the northwest suburb of Crystal Lake on Wednesday to highlight the benefits of the American family plan, the White House said.

The announcement of the president’s visit came as a welcome surprise, according to Crystal Lake Mayor Haig Haleblian.

“We had no idea that Crystal Lake would be selected,” he said. “We are honored and happy that he is coming to our city.”

Residents and businesses told NBC 5 that the Presidential Stop at Crystal Lake will help make the community a welcoming place.

“Everyone who comes to Crystal Lake is always a good thing,” said restaurant owner Rachel Skubiszewski. “We’re a great community here.”

The American Families Plan is primarily focused on children and education. Biden has also recently toured the Midwest promoting the need for an agreement in support of the country’s infrastructure.

“We have parts of McHenry County that still don’t have broadband,” said Suzanne Ness, a Democrat, whose district includes part of Crystal Lake. “I hope he will mention that and invest in education too, which I think is also very important.”

It is unclear exactly where the president will speak in Crystal Lake on Wednesday.

According to the Crystal Lake Historical Society, President Biden will be the first incumbent president to visit Crystal Lake.

Former President Donald Trump won 50.2% of the vote in McHenry County in the 2020 presidential election.
