A Tampa man, reported to have caused five separate hit-and-run crashes in Suwannee County with a rental truck, was arrested in Columbia County after attempting to elude Columbia County Sheriff’s Deputies, Lake City Police and the Florida Highway Patrol.
Suwannee County Deputies issued a “Be On the Lookout” (BOLO) report on Monday morning and the rental truck was spotted by CCSO Deputy John Snipes at 9:30 a.m. on U.S. 90 West at Interstate 75.
Deputy Snipes attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the driver continued eastbound on U.S. 90, making multiple U-turns. Deputy Snipes, assisted by Deputy Jesse Cieslik, Deputy Randy Harrison and units from the Lake City Police Department and Florida Highway Patrol, attempted to stop the driver.
The driver swerved at two CCSO units, trying to force them onto the median. Deputy Harrison was able to block the suspect's vehicle near Dominos Pizza.
Deputies Snipes and Cieslik removed the driver, Dale Edwin Baldwin, 48, of Tampa, from the U-Haul and took him into custody without incident.
Deputies found a loaded .45 semi automatic handgun from the driver's waistband. Deputies also found additional ammunition in the U-Haul for an assault type rifle. No damage was sustained to any law enforcement vehicles.
Several bottles of prescription medications were seized as evidence by the Florida Highway Patrol.
The FHP reports that Baldwin faces several counts of leaving the scene of a crash and DUI.
Baldwin was treated at the Lake City Medical Center for injuries sustained prior to this incident.
All charges are pending by FHP at this time until a laboratory analysis is completed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Bond was set at $80,000 for Baldwin.
